Pulley blocks & hand chain hoists
Last updated: September 2026
Whether in the workshop, on the construction site or in event technology – a pulley block is one of the indispensable helpers in lifting technology. As a hand chain hoist, it allows heavy loads to be lifted manually with minimal effort and high precision. In the online shop of Baumgart heben und sichern, you will find a selection of robust pulley blocks and spur gear pulley blocks that stand out thanks to their low-maintenance design, high load-bearing capacity and long service life.
Our pulley blocks: functional and reliable
Hand chain hoists and pulley blocks belong to the category of hoists and work on the principle of gear transmission. The movement generated by a hand chain is transferred to the load chain via a spur gear, which means that even large loads can be lifted in a controlled and safe manner. Our models are made from high-quality components such as alloy steel, highly corrosion-resistant ball bearings and heat-treated load chains. This ensures smooth operation, even under adverse conditions. Thanks to their compact design and easy handling, hand chain hoists are particularly suitable for mobile use and for confined spaces without a power supply.
Benefit from tested professional quality and good value for money. Whether in mechanical engineering, in maintenance or for temporary structures – our hand chain hoists are a reliable solution for lifting work.

Mechanical operating principle of hand chain hoists
Hand chain hoists work on the basis of a spur gear, which enables a powerful yet finely controllable movement. Pulling the hand chain activates a multi-stage gear train that transfers the force to the load chain. The key advantage of this design lies in the high gear ratio: even heavy loads can be moved precisely with minimal effort.
The gear consists of hardened gear wheels housed in a sturdy steel housing. The load is held by a load pressure brake, which is activated automatically with every lifting operation. It keeps the load stable in position even if the chain stops abruptly – an essential safety feature in lifting technology.
For a longer service life and reliable use, it is advisable to carry out a regular visual inspection of the load chain for deformation and to lubricate the gear. High-quality models have a double housing that minimises maintenance and prevents dust and moisture from entering.
You can find out how often and to what extent the inspection should be carried out on the page of our inspection service for hoists.

Typical applications for our hand chain hoists and pulley blocks
-
Workshops & maintenance: safe lifting and positioning of engines, gearboxes and machine components
-
Construction sites & assembly: lifting loads for scaffolding, formwork and laying steel girders
-
Industry & mechanical engineering: stable fixing of heavy workpieces and installation of large assemblies
-
Warehouse logistics & shipping: easy loading and unloading of heavy goods without a crane system
-
Private use: vehicle repairs, assembly work in garages and yards
To attach your pulley block securely, you need suitable slinging equipment such as shackles or lifting chains.
Lifting manually or electrically?
A pulley block is particularly suitable for mobile use without a power supply and for occasional, precise lifting by hand. If, on the other hand, you regularly lift heavy loads or need a motorised solution, an electric chain hoist is usually the better choice. Frequently asked questions about pulley blocks
These terms are often used for the same product in the trade, but they describe different aspects: "pulley block" is the common generic term for a manually operated hoist with a pulley or chain system. "Hand chain hoist" describes the method of operation – the load is moved via a hand chain, without any power supply. "Spur gear pulley block" additionally refers to the type of gear installed: a spur gear that amplifies the pulling force of the hand chain.
A hand chain hoist works on the principle of a spur gear: pulling the hand chain activates a multi-stage gear train that transfers the force to the load chain. This transmission makes it possible to lift even heavy loads precisely with little effort. An integrated load pressure brake holds the load securely in position, even when the hand chain is released.
A pulley block (hand chain hoist) is operated manually via a hand chain and does not require a power supply – ideal for mobile use and occasional lifting. An electric chain hoist performs the lifting with a motor and is particularly suitable for regular use or larger loads. You can find our range of electric chain hoists under electric chain hoists.
The required load capacity depends on the maximum weight of the load to be lifted plus a sufficient safety margin. Our range extends from 250 kg to 20,000 kg. If in doubt, always choose a model with a higher load capacity and never exceed the specified rated load.
Yes. Hoists such as pulley blocks are subject to mandatory inspection and must be inspected regularly by a competent person – in Germany in accordance with DGUV Regulation 54 and the Industrial Safety Regulation (BetrSichV), among others; in other countries, the respective national regulations apply. You can find details on inspection intervals and the procedure on the page of our inspection service for hoists. Please also observe the manufacturer's instructions on inspection before each use in the operating manual.
A pulley block is mounted via a suspension hook on a fixed attachment point – for example on a crane runway, a beam or a spreader beam with sufficient load capacity. A fixed attachment point on a beam or spreader beam can be created, for example, with a beam clamp. In the case of a movable attachment point on a crane runway or steel girder, this can be achieved, for example, with a push trolley or a geared trolley.
