MAS fall protection for professional work at height

Personal protective equipment against falls from a height is used wherever a hazard cannot be eliminated by priority technical or organisational protective measures such as side protection, railings or safety nets. In Germany, the specific thresholds and measures result from the risk assessment under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (ArbSchG) and the Industrial Safety Regulation (BetrSichV), as well as the requirements of ASR A2.1 (in German) and the relevant DGUV regulations; in other countries, the respective national regulations apply. MAS fall protection is typically used in these areas:

  • Roofing work on flat and pitched roofs, for example roofing jobs or the maintenance of photovoltaic systems.

  • Façade and scaffold construction, especially when erecting, modifying and dismantling scaffolding, where work is temporarily carried out without side protection.

  • Industrial and plant assembly, for example on crane systems, silos or in production halls with insufficiently secured platforms.

  • Maintenance of wind and telecommunications installations and radio towers, where long vertical routes have to be secured.

The choice of suitable equipment always depends on the working height, fall clearance, anchor point and range of movement. Please refer to the respective instructions for use and the product data sheet for the suitability of a specific product.

Which MAS PPE can you find in our shop?

MAS safety harnesses

The safety harness forms the interface between the user and the rest of the fall protection system. In the event of a fall, it distributes the arrest forces evenly across the shoulders, chest, pelvis and thighs. We stock the MAS 90 safety harness in sizes 48-56 and 54-62. It offers a rear fall arrest eyelet, two side eyelets for work positioning and restraint work, a chest strap, a waist belt with pass-through buckle and an 85 mm wide back pad for greater wearing comfort during longer periods of work. When choosing, make sure the harness fits correctly: shoulder and leg straps must fit snugly without constricting.

MAS safety sets

If you are looking for a ready-matched basic kit, the MAS safety sets are the obvious choice. The MAS 90 safety set combines the MAS 90 safety harness, a B 2 webbing lanyard of two metres, a fall arrester and a 15-metre rope, supplied in a sheet steel case. The much lighter MAS 40 Quick safety set contains the MAS 40 Quick safety harness, an ACB self-retracting lifeline with 1.8 m, a BS 20 karabiner and an equipment bag. Which set suits your application depends on the fall clearance, mobility at the workplace and the anchorage situation.

MAS self-retracting lifelines and guided type fall arresters

The MAS self-retracting lifeline with wire rope is available in lengths of 3, 4.5, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24 m. It automatically retracts the rope, locks in the event of a fall and is useful wherever the anchor point is above the user and a defined range of movement is required. For work along a flexible anchor line, we offer the MAS SK 12 guided type fall arrester on kernmantle rope with a diameter of twelve millimetres, in lengths of 5, 10, 15 and 20 m. The device runs along without intervention, locks abruptly under load and is preferably used for climbing and ladder work.

MAS webbing energy absorbers, lanyards and karabiners

The webbing energy absorber dissipates the arrest forces through controlled tearing and reduces the load on the body to a permissible level. In our shop, you will find the MAS BFD 5 webbing energy absorber in two hook combinations, namely MAS 51/MAS 51 for anchoring to conventional components and MAS 51/MAS 65 for wider anchorage profiles of up to 50 mm. The MAS BS 25 TW scaffold hook is available as a karabiner. Only combine lanyards, energy absorbers and karabiners within the approved overall system.

How do you choose the right MAS fall protection?

The right configuration depends on a few but important factors. Clarify the following points before buying:

  • Working environment: roof, scaffold, industrial hall or mast? This determines whether a work positioning, fall arrest or climbing protection system is required.

  • Range of movement: stationary work at a fixed point, horizontal movement along a track or vertical movement on a ladder?

  • Fall clearance: how much free space remains below the user? This value determines the maximum permissible lanyard length, including the energy absorber deployment distance.

  • Anchor point: is there a tested overhead anchor point, or is a temporary anchor device required?

  • Wearing time and comfort: for work lasting several hours, a harness with wide padding such as the MAS 90 pays off.

  • Team size: single-user set or several matched kits for work crews.

For complex applications, it is worth having a quick chat with our team in Ochtrup before you order.

Standards, inspection and safe use

In Germany, personal protective equipment against falls from a height is subject to a clearly defined framework of standards. The most important standards are EN 361 for safety harnesses, EN 354 for lanyards, EN 355 for energy absorbers, EN 360 for self-retracting lifelines, EN 353-2 for guided type fall arresters on a flexible anchor line, EN 362 for connectors and EN 365 for instructions for use, maintenance and periodic examination. Please refer to the marking on the item and the supplied data sheet to see which standard your specific product meets.

MAS GmbH has been certified to EN ISO 9001 since 2004 and has its products tested annually by the DGUV Test testing and certification body. Irrespective of this, the following applies to the user: in Germany, PPE against falls from a height must be visually inspected before each use and inspected and documented at least once a year by a competent person; in other countries, the respective national regulations apply.

Inspection service and repair directly at Baumgart

On request, we carry out the annual inspection of your MAS fall protection by a competent person directly at Baumgart heben und sichern – including an inspection report in accordance with the relevant DGUV requirements. We can also replace worn or damaged individual parts such as safety harnesses, shoulder straps or fall arrest eyelets, instead of you having to replace the entire system. Frequently asked questions about MAS fall protection: our FAQ

Both manufacturers stand for tested PPE against falls from a height on the German market. The decisive factor is therefore not the brand name, but whether the specific product suits your application: product type, standard, fit, wearing time and the available anchorage options. If you already use components from one brand, please talk to us before placing a mixed order.

Which standard applies depends on the product type. The specific standard is stated on the item label as well as in the data sheet and the instructions for use. Blanket statements for an entire range are not permissible here.

In Germany, the Occupational Safety and Health Act (ArbSchG), the Industrial Safety Regulation (BetrSichV) and the DGUV regulations are primarily relevant for temporary PPE solutions. Structural anchor devices may also be subject to the building regulations of the individual federal states, for example in the case of permanently installed anchor points on roofs. In other countries, the respective national regulations apply. A risk assessment by a qualified person should be carried out before any specific planning.

Start with the question of activity and location, then determine the available fall clearance and the anchor point. These data show whether a self-retracting lifeline, a guided type fall arrester or a lanyard with webbing energy absorber is the right choice. If in doubt, it is better to check with us once more.

The safety harness is an individual component. A safety set, on the other hand, contains all the components required for a typical application, i.e. harness, lanyard or fall arrester and a transport container. The components included in your chosen set are listed on the respective product page in our shop.

A visual inspection by the user must be carried out before each use. In addition, in Germany an inspection by a competent person with written documentation is mandatory at least once a year; in other countries, the respective national regulations apply. With intensive use, UV exposure or soiling, shorter intervals are advisable.

PPE that has arrested a fall must be withdrawn from use immediately. Safety harnesses and deployed webbing energy absorbers must be replaced. Self-retracting lifelines and guided type fall arresters may only be used again after inspection by the manufacturer or an authorised body. We will take your device and handle the process with MAS.

PPE against falls from a height may only be used by persons who have received instruction. In Germany, the content and frequency of the instruction are governed by the DGUV principles and DGUV Rule 112-198; in other countries, the respective national regulations apply. MAS GmbH offers its own competent person training courses for this purpose, for example the S1 course.

Connectors, energy absorbers and fall arresters are often compatible across brands, provided they have been tested to the same standards. However, the overall system must always be approved in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications. If in doubt, it is better to stick with one brand or ask us beforehand.
