Electric rope winches for precise lifting and pulling
Electric rope winches offer a reliable and powerful solution for moving loads in a wide variety of applications. They work via a motor-driven rope drum on which the wire rope is wound – controlled by push buttons or optionally via a radio remote control. The rope is wound or unwound evenly, allowing the load to be lifted or moved in a controlled manner. Depending on the application, models with a 230V connection (lifting or pulling work) or a 400V connection (pulling work only) are available.
The most important technical parameters of an electric rope winch are pulling force, rope speed, rope length and control. In our online shop, you will find models with pulling forces from 160 up to 5000 kg. Depending on the model, the rope or lifting speed ranges from 11 to 19 m/min and allows sensitive load movement, even in confined spaces or with delicate components. The integrated direct control with emergency stop as well as mechanical brakes or an upper limit switch ensure a high level of safety.
Application examples for electric rope winches:
-
Installation of air-conditioning and ventilation systems on false ceilings
-
Lifting units, machines or vehicle components in motor vehicle workshops
-
Positioning girders or steel parts on construction sites
-
Loading heavy units in industrial production
For particularly flexible applications, our models can be equipped with a wireless radio remote control. This allows the operator to work at a safe distance – for example in poor visibility or during overhead work. Further accessories such as a 10 m extension for the control cable and load hooks (suspension) for universal mounting on pipes, walls or steel girders can be added as options. For stationary applications, use swivelling jib arms – they allow the winch to be aligned optimally at the workplace and folded away to save space when not in use.
Our tip:
When choosing your electric rope winch, pay attention to the duty cycle (e.g. S3 25%) and to its suitability for multi-layer winding if frequently changing rope lengths are required.
Battery-powered rope winches for mobile use
Battery rope winches open up completely new possibilities for mobile use. They work independently of any power source and are therefore ideal for remote construction sites, temporary installations or forestry applications. Despite its compact design, our model delivers a high pulling force of 350 kg – with remarkably low noise and low-maintenance technology.
It is powered by high-performance 18V lithium-ion batteries, which allow several lifting operations per charge and 20 minutes of operation without a power source. The rope speed is 4 m/min and is designed for the precise transport of loads. An electronic overload system and mechanical backstops ensure that the load remains secured even if the power is interrupted.
Typical applications for battery rope winches:
-
Lifting tree trunks in forestry
-
Mobile installation of building components on roofs or scaffolding
-
Rescue and recovery operations with restricted access
-
Transporting material in difficult-to-access terrain
The units can be conveniently transported in a vehicle and do not require any separate installation work. With changing load weights or changes of direction, the use of deflection pulleys is particularly recommended in order to distribute the load more evenly and relieve the winch mechanically.
Our practical tip:
For longer work assignments, a second battery or a quick charger is worthwhile – this keeps the unit ready for use even under full load.
Quality and safety: a strong combination in professional rope winches
A key quality feature of professional rope winches is the gear. High-quality models work with a spur gear, which ensures efficient power transmission with a compact design. The rope speed also has a decisive influence on the working speed – slower winches offer more control, faster ones enable efficient material handling. The choice of rope length should be based on the maximum lifting or pulling distance.
Baumgart models are equipped with an integrated brake, limit switch, emergency stop and backstop. These components protect both people and material from uncontrolled movements or mechanical damage. With the international protection classes IP 44 and 54 of the IEC 60529 standard, all our rope winches are well suited for outdoor use in dust and splash water. In addition, insulation class F with a maximum permissible operating temperature of 155 °C and the classification in accordance with EN 14492-2 (FEM guideline) ensure a reliable and long service life of the electric motor and other components in operation.
Maintenance and servicing of rope winches
The reliable and safe operation of a rope winch depends largely on regular maintenance – especially with frequent use or in continuous professional operation. Although modern electric rope winches and battery models are considered largely low-maintenance, certain inspection and maintenance measures are essential to prevent wear and extend service life. You are responsible for regular inspection and documentation. Timely maintenance protects against failures and ensures compliance with legal regulations.
The most important steps include a visual inspection of the wire rope for abrasion, corrosion or broken strands and a check of the rope guide. Fastening elements should also be retightened, the brake tested and the function of the limit switch checked regularly. For winches with lubrication points (e.g. on the rope drum or the spur gear), regreasing in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions is required. Electrical components such as the control unit and connecting cables must be checked for insulation damage or corrosion.
Recommended maintenance intervals:
-
Daily visual check before start-up
-
Monthly function test with regular use
-
Annual expert maintenance for commercially used hoists – in Germany in accordance with DGUV Regulation 54; in other countries, the respective national regulations apply

Frequently asked questions about rope winches
230V rope winches are suitable for lifting and pulling work, while 400V models are designed exclusively for pulling work. The choice depends on the intended use and the available power supply.
Electric rope winches are suitable for stationary applications with a power connection (workshop, industry). Battery rope winches work independently of a power source and are ideal for mobile use, for example on construction sites or in forestry.
Yes, our models can optionally be equipped with a wireless radio remote control – practical in restricted visibility or during overhead work.
In Germany, annual expert maintenance in accordance with DGUV Regulation 54 is required by law for commercially used hoists; in other countries, the respective national regulations apply. In addition, the operator must check the emergency limit stops for correct function at the start of each work shift and report any defects found immediately. Please also observe the manufacturer's inspection and maintenance specifications in the operating manual.
The required pulling force depends on the actual load weight and on physical factors such as sliding and frictional forces or force deflections (e.g. via pulleys) – there is therefore no general rule of thumb. Our models cover different pulling force ranges, for example the DPS (230 V) for 200 to 500 kg or the DPT (400 V) for 300 to 5,000 kg. Choose the right model based on your actual load weight – if in doubt, we will be happy to advise you.
A rope winch is used for pulling and for positioning loads horizontally or at an incline, for example for recovery, loading or tensioning. A rope hoist – for example from Demag or Abus – is, by contrast, a power-driven hoist for lifting loads vertically, similar to a chain hoist, but with a wire rope instead of a chain. If you are looking for a hoist for vertical lifting, you can find our range of rope hoists here: Demag rope hoists / Abus rope hoists.
