Tie-down straps and lashing straps are suitable for light to medium-heavy loads, while lashing chains are used for very heavy or sharp-edged goods. Anti-slip mats reduce slipping on the loading area, and load securing nets secure loose or irregularly shaped goods.

In Germany, according to the German fine catalogue (Bussgeldkatalog), inadequate load securing is punishable by fines starting at 35 euros; if there is also a hazard, the fine rises to 60 euros and one penalty point in the Central Register of Driving Aptitude in Flensburg, and in the event of property damage to 75 euros and one point. More serious, repeated violations or accidents can result in considerably higher penalties, driving bans or criminal consequences. In other countries, the respective national regulations apply. In Germany, responsibility is shared by several parties: under Section 22 of the German Road Traffic Regulations (StVO), the driver must check before setting off that the load is adequately secured. Under Section 412 of the German Commercial Code (HGB), the loader is responsible for stowing the goods safely for transport. And under Section 7 of the German Road Traffic Act (StVG), the vehicle keeper is liable for damage resulting from the operation of the vehicle. In the event of a dispute, all parties are generally jointly liable until proven otherwise. In other countries, the respective national regulations apply.
Load securing is based on two principles that usually complement each other: with form-fit securing (blocking), the load is placed against side walls, locking bars or wedges without gaps so that it cannot move in the first place. With force-fit securing, the load is tied down with lashing straps or lashing chains (top-over lashing), while anti-slip mats increase friction and thus provide additional hold. In practice, most transports combine both principles to achieve sufficient safety.
Lashing straps and lashing chains must be visually checked by the user before each use (tears, cuts, deformation, corrosion). In addition, in Germany the Industrial Safety Regulation (BetrSichV Sections 3, 4 and 14) requires a periodic inspection by a competent person – for lashing straps in accordance with DGUV Rule 100-500 Chapter 2.8 and DGUV Information 209-061, for lashing chains in accordance with DGUV Rule 100-500 Chapter 2.8, generally at least once a year; in other countries, the respective national regulations apply. After exceptional stress, accidents or visible damage, an immediate additional inspection is required, and damaged material must be replaced rather than repaired.
